Programming, Practice & Study Sector Head
Duties and Responsibilities
As a Governing Council member,
- maintain communications with other members of the Governing Council to facilitate communication and align with the vision and practicalities of the Chicago Shambhala Center
- contribute to decisions about major policies and allocation of resources for the Center as a whole in view of the Center’s vision, goals and objectives;
- support the Governing Council in accomplishing its goals and objectives;
- engage members in working as a community, sharing Vision of the Chicago Shambhala Center to achieve the Center’s goals and objectives;
- provide information to the Governing Council regarding activities of the Programming, Practice, and Study Sector as appropriate;
- represent the Governing Council to Center membership and bring issues and questions from center membership back to the Governing Council;
- attend monthly Governing Council meetings and scheduled Governing Council retreats;
- actively engage self and others on the path of creating enlightened society in day-to-day conduct at large and within the Chicago Shambhala Center.
As head of the Programming, Practice, and Study Sector,
- maintain overview of Programming and work with Center Director on one hand, and the PPS division heads on the other, to plan, schedule, align program offerings and maintain appropriate practice and study environment throughout the year. See overall description of PPS sector;
- maintain contact with the Office of Practice and Education (OPE) in Halifax, attend programs with Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche (SMR) to keep abreast of the vision SMR has for Shambhala’s study and practice;
- call group meetings of PPS division heads to (1) be sure that vision is communicated to all divisions, and (2) meet that vision with their practicalities regarding local resources and needs;
- meet with division heads as necessary to maintain communications within the sector;
- ensure that each division produces programs that are in accord with both SMR’s instructions and local dharma demographics;
- be aware of the programming needs for public, beginners, intermediate, pre-seminary, seminary graduates, Vajrayana practitioners of all stripes (i.e. Kagyu, Nyingma, Shambhala), regarding practice opportunities, study opportunities, and the arts;
- provide guidance to division heads in planning the programs;
- keep contact with local teachers;
- work with division heads and Center Director in initiating contact with Acharyas, other senior and visiting teachers, visiting Buddhist lineage holders, and representatives of other traditions, outside of the specifically Buddhist or Shambhala traditions.
Knowledge, Experience and Background
Required:
- Center membership
- Familiarity with all educational and practice endeavors and areas in Shambhala
Desired:
- Knowledge of Governing Council operations
- Shambhala/Vajradhatu Vajrayana Seminary graduate
- Love of practice, knowledge, training and education
- Ability to vision forward
- Sense of balance of view and form
- Sense of celebration in offering programs to community - SMCC & Chicagoland
Time Commitment
- Attend monthly Governing Council meetings and special meetings as scheduled.
- Attend Governing Council Retreat(s).
- Lead monthly meetings with PPS Departments.
- Support PPS divisions in setting annual objectives, goals, and budgets as needed.
Skills and Abilities
Required:
- Consistent follow through;
- Good facilitation skills, strong communication skills (written and verbal);
- Seeks and offers feedback in ways that demonstrate respect and appreciation.
- Able to use electronic media effectively.
