Community Area Head Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities

  • As a Governing Council member,
    • contribute to decisions about major policies and allocation of resources for the Center as a whole in view of the Center’s vision, goals and objectives;
    • support the Governing Council in accomplishing its goals and objectives;
    • engage Governing Council members in taking the Vision of the Chicago Shambhala Center and putting it into action as a community.
    • provide information to the Governing Council regarding activities of Community Area as appropriate;
    • represent the Governing Council to informally to center membership and bring issues and questions from center membership back to the Governing Council;
    • attend monthly Governing Council meetings and scheduled Governing Council retreats;
    • actively engage self and others on the path of creating enlightened society in day-to-day conduct at large and within the Chicago Shambhala Center.
  • As head of the Community Area,
    • act as a liaison between the Governing Council and the Community area conveying information, decisions, and direction;
    • set agenda and lead monthly meetings with the chairs of the committees and others included in the Community area (Membership, Health and Well-being, Communication, and Creating Inclusive Community);
    • assist Community area Committees in coordinating with each other and with other Shambhala Center Committees as appropriate to accomplish goals and objectives;
    • provide support to Community area Chairs in developing annual objectives, goals, and budgets as appropriate;
    • engage self and others in engaging with the slogan “Community as path and support for dharma practice”;
    • organize annual Community area meeting with help of committee members

Knowledge, Experience, Background Required or Desired

  • Required:
    • Center membership
    • Strong commitment to the vision/slogan of the Community area: “Community as path and support for practice.”
    • Member or chair/co-chair of one Community area committee.
  • Desired:
    • Knowledge of Governing Council operations
    • Completion of Shambhala Training Level 5

Time Commitment

  • Attend monthly Governing Council meetings and special meetings as scheduled.
  • Attend Governing Council Retreat(s).
  • Lead monthly meeting with Community area Chairpersons.
  • Support Community area Committees in setting annual objectives, goals, and budgets as needed.

Skills and Abilities

  • Required
    • Ability to translate Shambhala vision into actions and practices that support the workings of the Governance Council and the Community area;
    • Consistent follow through;
    • Good facilitation skills, strong communication skills (written and verbal);
  • Desired:
    • Seeks and offers feedback in ways that demonstrate respect and appreciation.
    • Able to use electronic media effectively.

Term Limit

Two year renewable term

Nominated and elected by members of Community area committees or appointed by Center Director
