Finance and Development Director

The Finance and Development Director (FDD) shares the responsibility and oversight of the financial health of the Chicago Shambhala Center with the Governing Council and the Center Director, and reports to the Council in a manner directed by the Council.

The FDD will advise the Council and supervise subsidiary committees and work with staff on financial planning and development, fundraising and accounting.

The FDD is appointed by the Governing Council to serve for a period of 2-3 years with option for renewal of service.

Duties and Responsibilities

Budgeting and Reporting

The FDD, in cooperation with the Council:

  • Oversees and lays out an annual budgeting process for each of the Council Members responsible for activities that support the Center financially.
  • Designs management reports for the various program and community service departments for budgeting and planning purposes.
  • Recommends areas where financial policy is needed and drafts suggestions for Council approval.
  • Provides financial input for new items or programs that impact the budget and makes recommendations to the Council.
  • Monitors the budget quarterly and semiannually in collaboration with the Center Director and reports to Council.
  • Relates to the Finance Director at Core Services providing accounting reports as required or requested.
  • Communicates with Finance Directors of other Centers when appropriate.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality in all matters relating to member donations and personal financial matters except when necessary to assist committees working with member development or to preserve the financial integrity of the Center.

Fund Raising and Development

  • With approval of the Governing Council, may appoint or recommend standing Dana (Generosity/Fundraising) or Financial Planning Committees, and ask the Council to delegate to these committees the responsibility to accomplish long term financial and strategic planning goals for the Center. Such committees may be asked to report directly to the Council. The FDD will serve as an ex-officio member of any such independent committees.
  • Advises and supports ongoing fundraising and membership pledge drives by providing financial information to working committees.
  • Advises the Programming, Practice and Study Head concerning appropriate program fees, honoraria and other items that may impact income generation for the Center.

Administration:

  • May appoint (or recommend to the Council) persons to serve as bursars and book keepers and delegate such duties listed below as necessary and appropriate.
  • Maintain all financial records.
  • Collect financial information for annual reporting to Core Services.
  • Manage payroll, insurance, special funds.

Qualifications:

  • A strong connection with Shambhala and the Chicago Center with a thorough understanding and acceptance of our vision
  • Experience in financial planning, money management, accounting and book keeping
  • Ability to train and work with others to both expedite the efficient maintenance of the Center accounts and establish structures and procedures for raising funds
  • Good interpersonal skills to work with the Center Director, Council Members, and committee chairs in seeing financial health as a collaborative effort, necessary for the fulfilling of our vision.
