Programming, Practice & Study
Overview
The prime concern for Programming, Practice & Study ("PSS") is to manifest both the vision and practicality for Shambhala Buddhist practice and study as expressed by the Sakyong, at the Chicago Shambhala Center.
PPS covers the spectrum of programs offered at the Center for: Shambhala Training; the Way of Shambhala; Shambhala Buddhism; Dharma Arts; Buddhism generally; and allied wisdom traditions and modalities (e.g. yoga, Qigong, etc.)
The seats on the PPS team are:
- Head of Program, Practice and Study
- Practice Coordinator
- Shambhala Training Resident Director
- The Way of Shambhala Coordinator
- Shambhala School of Buddhist Studies/Enrichment Coordinator
- Contemplative Arts Coordinator
- Meditation Instructors Coordinator
- Learn To Meditate Coordinator
- Vajrayana Coordinator
- Head Shrine Keeper
- Shambhalaonline Representative
- A range of support volunteers
Terms of service: two years
Selection: combination of spontaneous insight and recruitment.
The PPS functions include:
- Cultivate/maintain the roster of Shambhala Training Directors, MI’s, Shambhala Guides, teachers, assistant directors, coordinators/staff, and shrine keepers. (MI Coordinator interface with the Volunteer Coordinator on keeping an updated database.)
- Identify the practice and study priorities and array of course offerings of the Chicago Center, based upon needs and interests of the community and the human and financial resources of the Center. (Head of Programming, Practice & Study)
- Coordinate the programming for open gate sessions at the Center (Tuesdays/Sundays). (MI Coordinator)
- Coordinate and/or set the priorities/tone/intent/schedule for sadhana sessions, feasts, celebrations and other ritual events. (Practice Coordinator/Vajrayana Coordinator/Social Coordinator)
- In collaboration with the Center Director, invite Acharyas and other senior teachers to teach at the Center; coordinating with the Rusung on event logistics. (Resident Directors of ST and WOS; Head of PPS, Practice Coordinator, Center Director)
- Schedule, recruit Directors/AD’s/staff for Shambhala Training, Way of Shambhala, and Dharma Art programs. In addition, upload program info to the planning calendar and website, plan and coordinate publicity with the Communications Committee and with the Administrations/Operations Sector. (Resident Directors of ST and WOS; Center Director)
- Through leadership of the MI Coordinator, communicate mandala updates, views, etc. with Center MIs and Shambhala Guides and assist them in cultivating their students’ practice and study, and in cultivating their skills as meditation instructors.
- Organize an advanced practice and study path and offer Vajrayana and advance Shambhala programs and practice weekends. (Vajrayana Coordinator; Practice Coordinator)
- Through the leadership of the Contemplative Arts Coordinator, provide a range of arts and contemplative programs that coordinate with the other Shambhala Buddhist programs and can also function as independent programs. (Contemplative Arts Coordinator)
- PPS leaders and/or coordinators lead training of volunteers for program staffing and stewardship of the facility environment as it relates to practice (type/location of teacher pictures, shrine elements, etc.). Include shrine maintenance, liturgy maintenance, and ikebana as practices. Coordinate with the Head of Culture and Decorum. (Practice Coordinator, Head Shrinekeeper, ST and WOS Resident Directors, Contemplative Arts Coordinator)
- Ensure the quality and integrity of material presented by providing mentoring and coaching, observation & feedback to class instructors and facilitators. (Head of Programming, Practice & Study)
- Interface with other wisdom tradition representatives to evaluate the relationship with the Shambhala mandala and make short and long term recommendations to the Governing Council about partnering/working together. (Head of PPS)
- Draft annual plan and budget as part of participating in the annual Center budgeting process. Draft individual program budgets, including setting program fees that are in line with the annual budget for Program, Practice, and Study. Monitor program expenses and income compared to budget. Train program coordinators in budgeting, tracking income and expenses, and reporting financially upon program completion. Adopt guidelines for program budgeting.
- Advertise Shambhalaonline events, coordinating with the Center of the Mandala.
